Our sale of 20% and higher on beautiful yarns will continue through 5pm on December 31st. We had originally planned to close at noon on New Year’s Eve but due to the huge interest in our sale, we’ve extended our hours to 5pm.
All of us at the Cottage wish you and yours a Happy Holiday Season!
Our Holiday Hours are as follows:
Closing at 12:00pm Christmas Eve.
Closed Christmas and New Year’s Day.
Open both Saturdays!
We will be open this coming Sunday, December 13th from 1-4 pm rather than our normal 3rd Sunday opening. Families are gathering for special times together on the 20th, so we hope the 13th will suit you just as well. We have lots of new items in the shop that we’re sure you’ll want to see. Great gift ideas such as beautiful shawl pins and buttons to match, unusual needles, Addi Click Sets, Denise Needle and Crochet Kits and gift certificates!
Please remember that we’ll be glad to open by special request for times convenient for you!
Whether you’re an experienced crafter or a wannabe, you’ve got plenty of company this gift-giving season.
According to a study by the National Retail Federation, 16.7% of U.S. consumers plan to make more gifts this year. This number includes people who have not made gifts in the past. Other, less formal, studies show that, among crafters, roughly 60% will make gifts this year.
We’re doing our part here at the Cottage to supply you with the finest materials and a variety of patterns to suit any skill level. And if your brain is too fried to put together a project, just pick out one of our kits and start to work.
Crafting can also be a family tradition to continue or to start in 2010. If you want to bring a family member in to learn to knit or crochet, just give us a call.
Featured here is a hounds tooth crocheted bag made by our very own Kathy Cruse. Several other bags here in the shop will inspire you to new creative heights!
Noni bags are bags to be worn, not just carried. They are, like jewelry or any adornment, extensions of our personalities.
Everyone who’s been in the shop and seen these purse patterns and handles either wants one or wants someone to make them one. They come in sizes from itty-bitty evening bag to bowling bag!
As knitters, we value the feel of natural fibers and the animals and plants from which they come. This year we’ve decided to partner with The Heifer Project, whose work I so admire, to donate enough to buy four wool-producing animals for families in need. These animals will give new hope to families. We invite you to join us in this worthy initiative.
You can donate here at the shop or go directly to The Heifer Project and give a gift in someone’s honor. Who wouldn’t like the warm feeling that you gave in their name a gift that will yield countless bundles of wool for families to make clothes, blankets, ponchos and more … handcrafted pieces earn income for food and basic necessities.
Heifer’s mission is to end hunger and poverty while caring for the earth. For more than 60 years, Heifer International has provided livestock and environmentally sound agricultural training to improve the lives of those who struggle daily for reliable sources of food and income. And since 1944, it has helped 48 million people through training in livestock development and livestock gifts that multiply.

Some fun items I’ve been knitting on this fall:
Something I hardly ever do is knit something from start to finish without picking up something else in between. However, when we received the highly anticipated Punta del Este Thousand Colors yarn, I went to work on “Ingenue” from Custom Knits. I used size 10 needles and start to finish it took 2 weeks! I have been waiting on this yarn since I first saw it last spring, absolutely lovely is all I can say. Another yarn I have fallen for is a brand new chunky yarn called “Contessa” from Rosetti Yarns. This is a mohair blend that is so soft and has a subtle little sequin every now and then. The guage says 14 sts. and 10 rows = 4″ on a size 11, but it has a wide range you could achieve. I knit a sample and got 2 sts. to the inch on size 17 needles. This would be excellent for those chunky or bulky patterns that knit or crochet up so quickly. I will be making mine in “Tess” from the Heartfelt Book. This yarn will be fantastic for the holidays. Sara and I are starting a little felted entrelac bagc in Noro Kureyon from Interweave Holiday Knits Magazine. These are entrelac in-the-round and we will be offering this as a class. It is a great little gift bag and you can make 2 from 1 skein!
Check out our class schedule for November and December to see what else we are up to at Cottage Yarn. We will have classes on projects you can finish for the Holidays!
With beautiful new fall and winter yarns arriving almost daily, we’re putting together project kits for your shopping ease and project pleasure. Comprised of a pattern or book, yarn and other necessities, we’ve priced our kits to move.
Yarns from Louisa Harding such as Willow Tweed (pictured) combine together to make an adorable purse called “Hawthorn.” This kit is available NOW — while it lasts!
